Rare map of Lombardy showing also Veneto to up to Venice, Liguria, and part of Romagna. The title sits in the upper left corner in a cartouche bearing the place and publisher’s name: “Nurnberg Hoffmani.” Given that the Nuremberg publisher Johannes Hoffman passed away in 1698, it is likely that the map was released by the “Hoffmann Heirs”. At the bottom left (near the Gulf of Genoa), two scales are displayed without a frame, showing distances in ‘Milliaria Italica’ and ‘Milliaria Germanica.’
This map remains largely unexplored, absent from known references, as noted by the authors of the bibliography “Terre di Langobardia” (p. 83 nr. 31) Davoli, Sanfelici, and Zanasi, who are among the few to mention it: “We found no detailed account of this exceedingly rare map in the references we consulted […] From a cartographic perspective, it faithfully echoes earlier maps, offering no notable additions even for the Este region. While less refined than contemporary Dutch and French maps, it stands as a significant example of smaller centers’ cartographic output.”
Johann Hoffmann, born in Frankenberg, Saxony, on 17 March 1629, was a publisher, bookseller, and art dealer frequently entangled in legal issues with Nuremberg authorities due to various illicit activities, including plagiarism. He passed away on 27 March 1698.
