A large very decorative Japanese world map published as sugoroku (a Japanese game which might be compared to backgammon) published as a supplement to the 1930 New Year’s Day edition of the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun newspaper. The really interesting map is drawn on a Mollweide projection instead the more commonly used Mercator projection: cartographers use the Mollweide projection when an accurate representation of area takes precedence over the accuracy of shapes. Countries are in shades of yellow, orange, green, red, purple and brown; oceans are blue. The graphically striking design encouraging players to make their way around the world along aviation routes of various types. The map also features the tracks of four legendary pioneering flights, being: the Circumnavigation of World by the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) in 1924; Charles Lindbergh’s Solo Transatlantic Flight (May 20-1, 1927); the Airship Italia’s route to the North Pole (1928); and the Circumnavigation by the Graf Zeppelin airship in 1929. Japan lies at the center, with countries identified by national flags. Around the border of the map are black and white images of people, animals, and historical buildings relating to the different stops along the way. The map was published to advertise also the comfortable aircraft Vickers Viscount a new British medium-range turboprop airliner first flown in 1948, the first such aircraft to enter service in the world. The Viscount was well received by the public for its cabin conditions, which included pressurisation, reductions in vibration and noise, and panoramic windows. It became one of the most successful and profitable of the first post-war transport aircraft. The large map, published by Atelier Perceval as depliant brochure in 1950 is decorated by a compass rose. On the verso pics of the aircraft and description of its comforts and some photos of the most beautiful destinations.
